High Resolution Imaging with Winmate's Healthcare Display Series

Winmate, Taiwan, 14.05.2020 - The adequate and repeatable performance of the image display system is a key element of information technology platforms in a modern hospital environment. Medical imaging professionals such as information technology specialists, and medical physicists routinely use a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) to transfer, process, store, and display medical images. Winmate, a manufacturer certified ISO 13485:2016 and EN ISO 13485:2016, offers medical grade display series to improve patient care while meeting the stringent manufacturing regulations set by the healthcare industry.

Understanding display performance

Defining image quality involves a number of metrics. These range from terminology created before the invention of the incandescent light to the modern definitions found in DICOM Part 14, Grayscale Standard Display Function (GSDF). Here in this article we will go through the main features of the display intended for a use in healthcare facilities.

Wide viewing angle

Display intended for use in a surgical room should provide a wide viewing angle, which allow the user to see accurate and consistent images from any point of view, and allows two or more people to view and interpret the screen simultaneously from different locations in the same operation room.

Backlight sensor and ambient light sensor

Medical grade displays typically have a technology that can monitor and adjust the backlight levels as they change over time. A backlight sensor continuously monitors and stabilizes the brightness/ luminance output, helps to ensure a stable image depiction over time for optimum viewing. The ambient light sensor will assist the Human Visual System (HVS) to adapt to the changing room light conditions giving the user a consistent visual experience.

Multipicture functionality

Multitasking and simultaneous viewing of up to four (4) video sources (Quad multipicture mode) at 1080p resolution.

Picture-in-Picture (PIP) function separates the screen into two parts. One source device is displayed on the main screen at the same time the another source device is displayed in inset windows.

Picture-by-Picture (PBP) function separates the screen in half displaying output from two different source devices simultaneously on the left and right sides of the screen.

Gamma correction 14-bit LUT technology

The 4K UHD monitors intended for medical use usually offer 10-bit color with more than 1.07 billion variations. A 14-bit look-up table (LUT) is included and offers 256 of the most appropriate tones. Gamma ( γ ) values of 2.4, 2.2, 2.0 and 1.8, are precisely calibrated at winmate facility. To provide users with color accuracy solutions, Winmate works together wtih Portrait Displays, Inc., a global leader in visual enhancement software applications and middleware solutions for the display industry.

Pixel-perfect images for clinicians

The DICOM standard defines how grayscale images must be shown on medical displays so they can be displayed consistently regardless of the brand name or the manufacturer. The DICOM gray-scale standard display function (GSDF) specifies the precise display luminance that should be produced for a given input value. The practical result of using the GSDF is that different displays can be set to have the same gray-scale response (for consistent presentation of images), which may help improve the perceptual linearity of a display over other calibration settings and thus better match the capabilities of the HVS, resulting in better diagnostic performance.

Convinient user controls

Physical buttons or capacitive touch keys with multi-touch provide greater control and flexibility, quick and easy access to the information and display settings making medical display a reliable solution in a variety of scenarios where human-interface interaction is involved. Meanwhile, when in sterilized environments accessing menu settings through physical buttons is not an option, the infrared remote control offers the ability to manage and adjust display settings remotely that help to prevent cross contamination.
